Phases of Sexual Intercourse

This lecture is about the phases of sexual intercourse. When you understand the phases, you would be able to know which phase needed to be prolonged to avoid premature ejaculation.

There are four main phases of sexual intercourse. They are

· Excitatory/ Arousal phase – During arousal, blood floods into the genitals, triggering the man's penis to stiffen and becomes erect. The man's testicles pull closer to his body, and his scrotum becomes engorged, thicker and flatter. This is a parasympathetic nervous system effect.

· Plateau phase – Here the penis penetrate, other factors accelerates, thrusting movements, peristalsis moves sperm from epidydimis to ductus deference, the blood pressure and heart rate increases, the muscles becomes tense, cowper’s glands releases fluid at tips and sex flush.

· Orgasmic phase – Here there is emission and expulsion of sperm. When muscle tension and genital engorgement peak, a series of rhythmic contractions occurs in the sex organs. The contractions force the congested blood from the tissues back into circulation. There is an abrupt release of muscle tension and a pleasurable sensation. The penile contractions expel semen out of the urethra; this is known as ejaculation

· Refractory/ Resolution phase -. Following orgasm, heart rate and blood pressure gradually return to their normal levels. The penis becomes flaccid and returns to its unaroused state. After orgasm, it takes some time before an individual can have another orgasm. A man generally needs to wait longer — from several minutes to hours or days, depending on his age — before he is able to ejaculate again.

While it's possible to identify these phases, not every sexual encounter needs to progress through all four phases in an orderly manner. Nor must the process necessarily include orgasm. This much is true for both women and men.

What Causes Premature Ejaculation?

There are different causes of premature ejaculation. When you know what causes your Premature Ejaculation, you will know how to deal with it.
To simplify things, I am going to classify the causes under two categories.

First Category - Inexperience
Inexperience is a factor that commonly causes premature ejaculation among younger men. For first timers, sex could get clumsy especially if they have not learnt how to go about it by reading materials or tutorial videos.

Older men would definitely testify that they are better at control now than when they were younger. It is the quality that counts and not the quantity.

Inexperience comes in when you have not learned to recognize the feeling of near ejaculation.
When you are experienced, you will get to know what phase you are during intercourse.

Without emotional experience, you would not understand what is going on in your body or your partner’s. This could result in you ‘cumming’ too fast or what i call premature ejaculation.

Second Category - Anxiety

This is the most important and most common factor seen in premature ejaculation and it cuts across all age groups. This refers to any emotions that disturb the intimate flow between you and your sexual partner.

There are numerous emotions that can causes premature ejaculation but i’ll explain only four...

Fear - The fear of getting your partner pregnant without being ready for it, the fear of contracting sexually transmitted diseases or being unsure of your partner.

Anger – Here, you are attracted to her body but still angry with her, so you want to just get it off your system as fast as possible. The solution is to talk about your feelings and never go to bed without resolving the issue or better still avoid sex till you sort out your issues.

Shame – You have to learn to talk to your partner about your sexual preferences. Express your fantasies and try to reach a compromise. Don’t go out to have affairs and then come home filled with guilt and shame and unable to perform.

Performance Anxiety - In bed, we all want to perform perfectly anything less than that is unacceptable. So we end up getting so worked up about how to satisfy your new partner or how to impress your partner even more that you mess up things.
